More than 500 acts when NGBG returns
There will be everything from harp music to metal belly dancing when the NGBG festival returns for the 9th time. But for all of us that are used to a one day festival literally stuffed with music and culture, this year will be different.
Norra Grängesbergsgatan will be filled with happenings, but not just on the one Saturday. Instead, it will start on Thursday, September 12, and go on for three days and involve around 500 different creators.
Last year a record number of people, close to 50,000, visited the festival. This year the festival has doubled the opening hours so that the record can be broken.
The thinking behind this is that anyone, good or bad, who wants to join should be able to. This year the organisers realised they couldn't fit any more stages into the area, so they expanded the festival instead.
Since the festival started on Norra Grängesbergsgatan and surrounding streets, it has quickly attracted increasing interest.
But one of the festival's founders, Nicklas Johansson, refuses to name his favourite acts for this years festival.
– Then I will become what I don't want to become. Our basic purpose is that we exist for everyone and are a kind of collage where everything happens at the same time, everything from metal belly dancing to psy trance,” he says. “If I were to select a few, it would go against the basic purpose of the festival. We try to be a little counter to the traditional.”
So who is the intended target audience?
– Everyone. We have artists between the ages of 15 and 82, and you are welcome to bring your children and go to Byggleken [stage area]. We have club organisers who bring their children, for example.
If you feel overwhelmed by the many options Nicklas Johansson recommends the following:
– Go on a journey of discovery. Go out with an open mind and discover things you didn't know existed. You can be taken by a creative desire that exists. It is not the individual act that is interesting, but the collage that comes as a result from it.
