Mini-interview with Ingrid Berg from Nordisk Panorama Film Festival
What is Nordisk Panorama Film Festival?
The 35th edition of Nordisk Panorama Film Festival will take place 19–24 September and feature a variety of films, special screenings and events. 57 films compete for awards in five categories: Best Nordic Documentary, Best Nordic Short Film, New Nordic Voice, Young Nordic, and the City of Malmö’s Audience Award. The winners will be announced on the festival’s final day, 24 September.
Nordisk Panorama is a non-profit organisation representing the Nordic filmmakers’ perspectives on the world through documentary and short fiction films. Nordisk Panorama Film Festival is the annual flagship of Nordic documentaries and short films. Since 1990 the festival has screened the best Nordic short films and documentaries in our competitions and special programmes, awarding the very best Nordic documentaries and short films with great prizes. Since 2013 the festival has taken place in Malmö.
What can visitors expect?
In total, 76 films (including competition and special programme) will be screened all over Malmö and highlight intimate personal stories to critical global issues. On top of that, we arranged punk concerts, clubs, directors talk and a graffiti workshop - much of it free to the audience.
What are your tips/recommendations for visitors to the festival?
See at least one or two full length documentaries and one short film programme. If you struggle with choosing, you can look through out themes at our website.
Here are some of our highlights:
20/9 - 21.00, Balomania!, Panora
In the heart of Brazil’s favelas a secret society of hot air balloon-makers risk arrest to create and fly their illegal masterpieces, painting the sky with colour. Condemned by the authorities as dangerous delinquents, the ’baloeiros’ are outlaw street artists operating in secrecy, evading government reprisal and bounty hunters, and bringing joy to communities.
20/9 - 18.00, Life is Beautiful, Panora
We follow the Palestinian filmmaker Mohamed Jabaly, who is involuntarily stuck in Tromsø, Norway, when the border to Gaza was closed in 2014. Jabaly won the Best Director award at the film's premiere at IDFA in Amsterdam
Breakfast screenings at Spegeln
We have 4 breakfast screenings at Spegeln this year. It includes breakfast and a package of short films. I warmly recommend the package called Family Tapestry - it includes two of my favourite short films from this year: Iris and Maybe Elephants.
Glömskans arkiv - free event but you need to reserve a ticket
Archives of Oblivion is a suite of poems by Felicia Mulinari and Athena Farrokhzad written in dialogue with social movements about memory, grief and racist violence, with Malmö as the backdrop. The screening will be followed by a conversation between Athena Farrokhzad, Saga Gärde, and Suvi West (director of Homecoming).
ILOVERUSS by Tova Mozard - free event
In this multi-screen installation, we follow Tova Mozard and the struggling actor Russ Kingston in Hollywood over a 20-year period. This captivating piece has already drawn over 20,000 visitors at Nikolaj Kunsthal in Copenhagen and the Cecilia Hillström Gallery in Stockholm.
Visit the festival bar Brogatan
Throughout the festival Brogatan is hosting clubs and parties. For example SMiSK on Friday, and Coil Collective on Saturday. Any other day you can go for drinks and mingle.
